The Mitsubishi Montero Sport is one of the most popular SUVs in the Philippines, constantly hitting the list of annual top-selling cars in the country. It continues to gain popularity not just as a status symbol but as a family car and a tough, reliable midsize body-on-frame SUV on and off the road. The third-generation Montero Sport has a totally redesigned front that showcases Mitsubishi's 'Dynamic Shield' grille, which is the benchmark of the brand's modern lineup.
The Montero Sport has chrome linings that surround the huge air intakes and extends up to the fog lamps, complemented by sleek LED head and tail lights. Inside, seats for the top-of-the-line Montero Sport variants are wrapped in leather with added sportier trims for the GT variant. An 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system serves as the central control and entertainment for its driver and passengers. As for its engine, the all-new Montero Sport is powered by a new 2.4L four-cylinder DOHC 16V MIVEC VG Turbocharged clean diesel power plant. MIVEC, which stands for Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control system, is responsible in achieving its high power output, low fuel consumption, and low exhaust emissions.
In January 2016, Mitsubishi Philippines launched the third-generation Montero Sport, replacing its predecessor in terms of refinement, style, and power. It gets a redesigned from fascia that showcases Mitsubishi's 'Dynamic Shield' grille, which is the benchmark of the brand's modern lineup.
On October 4, 2019, the refreshed Montero Sport was launched in the Philippines to give the top-selling SUV an updated look. It initially came with three 4x2 variants, with prices not crossing the P2-million mark.
The Montero Sport sits on a ladder-frame chassis, available in rear-wheel and four-wheel-drive configurations. Power comes exclusively from the(4N15) 2.4L In-line 4 DOHC 16-Valve Clean Diesel with VGT and MIVEC that produces 176 hp and 430 Nm of torque. It’s connected to either an 8-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmissions.
The Montero Sport’s suspension is double wishbone with coil springs and stabilizer bar up front, and 3-link coil springs with stabilizer bar at the rear. All wheels have disc brakes.

The Montero Sport’s 176-hp, 430 Nm torque Diesel engine feeds power in linear fashion, with the power spread throughout its 8-speed transmission. This is advantageous for fuel-efficiency and passenger comfort (no abrupt acceleration). It has paddle shifters as well, just in case you want more power.
The Montero Sport’s steering is a bit of a workout, which is kind of a problem when maneuvering in tight spaces. On the upside, it gives this fairly huge machine stability on highway cruises and makes the overall handling on-point.
The Montero Sport comes with several high-tech and convenient amenities to match its price tag. The GT variant comes with two 8-inch LCD displays found on the instrument cluster and infotainment system. The latter also comes with Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatibility.
Other tech features include a power tailgate for the GT variant, Tomtom Navigation for GT and GLS, reverse sensors, and reverse camera, among others. Cruise control is standard across the lineup.
The Montero Sport carries Mitsubishi’s Dynamic Shield design language that can be seen in the marque’s other cars. The three-tier headlight configuration is its primary deviation from other SUVs in the market, along with its extended vertical taillights. The Montero Sport comes with LED headlights and daytime running lights for the GT and GLS trims, partnered with halogen fog lamps.
In addition to these, the Montero Sport has a 30-degree approach angle, a 23-degree ramp break-over angle, and a 24.2-degree departure angle. With a 218mm ground clearance, it has a 700mm wading depth capacity.
Inside, the Montero Sport employs a straight-forward dashboard that’s easy to operate. The range-toppers get leather seats with motorized adjustments, while most of the materials found on the dashboard are mostly polyurethane, satin chrome plastics, and piano black plastics.
Space is plenty inside the Montero Sport and cargo volume is expandable due to the configurable seats. The third row can be folded flat on the floor using a function that’s unique to the Montero Sport, exposing a huge cargo space.
What you will like about the Montero Sport is its powerful yet thrifty engine, enough to bring you virtually anywhere. It also has a notable passenger comfort and cavernous cabin space.
On the flip side, you might not like the extensive use of piano black plastics inside the Montero Sport. These types of plastics are dirt- and scratch-prone, so you will need to be careful on touching those.
